Santa Ana, CA – Following the Trump Regime’s expansion of immigration enforcement through executive action, Hairo Cortes, Program Coordinator of the Orange County Immigrant Youth United, Issued the following statement:
“Today the Trump Regime continued its shameless attacks on marginalized communities, and turned into policy many of his demagogic campaign promises to launch a concerted attack on immigrants from all walks of life.
As the hardliners on the right push to coerce our cities, our counties, and our states into compliance with destructive immigration enforcement policies that seek to turn local law enforcement agencies into immigration agents, it is the responsibility of our local governments to hold a firm line and use every tool at their disposal to protect all immigrants and resist federal, anti-immigrant cooption.
For Santa Ana this means ending its complicity in the morally bankrupt prison for profit business under which the city currently accepts monies from ICE to detain undocumented immigrants in its jail. For other cities in Orange County this means using Santa Ana’s recent Sanctuary Ordinance as it’s model for implementing enforceable protections for immigrants within their jurisdiction, and foregoing symbolic though ultimately insubstantial resolutions.”
